The Italian Sandwich

The term “Little Italy” might conjure up images of narrow streets in an East Coast city but rarely St. Louis, the gateway to the West. However, St. Loo, known for its primo barbecue and Midwest fare, has a charming Italian district called the Hill. There are plenty of good restaurants, bakeries and bocce lanes in the neighbourhood, but true sandwich connoisseurs head straight to Amighetti’s for a torpedo-style sandwich (named for the shape of its bun). This lunchtime institution has several versions, but two outstanding ones – the Amighetti Special and the Little Bit of Italy – are equal to the star choices in the finest South Philly hoagie huts. The Amighetti Special (my favourite) is composed of a delectable layer of salami covered with onions, sweet pepperoncinis, brick cheese and Amighetti’s special sauce. It’s soft, aromatic bliss – and the perfect way to fend off the St. Louis blues.
